Sihanoukville has seen a rise in sex tourism over the past few years. As this continues, prostitution and exploitation of women is becoming increasingly socially acceptable. M’Lop Tapang’s Girls at Risk Programme is directed towards those girls who, because of difficult family circumstances, are forced to find work in karaoke bars, which can often lead to sex work. M’Lop Tapang provides these young women with training linked to viable local income generating opportunities, such as sewing, cooking and hospitality (restaurants, hotels etc), and because the majority of these girls have little or no education they are also offered literacy and basic life skills classes.
The M’Lop Tapang Vocational Training Programme offers young men training in motor mechanics, electronics, construction, welding and cooking. Both girls and boys also have access to training in desk-top publishing, basic business management and accounting. Over 20 young men and women are now part of M’Lop Tapang’s Apsara Dance and Traditional Khmer Arts Team who regularly perform at special events and ceremonies for a small fee. A number of youths have also learnt to play traditional Cambodian drums and have begun performing in the slums as part of M’Lop Tapang’s awareness activities. |
