Kenya

In Kenya, an estimated 1 million children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS; others are forced to leave home due to family breakdown and domestic violence.  These children often find themselves living and working on the streets, where they are extremely vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

Western Education Advocacy and Empowerment Programme (WEAEP)
ICT and WEAEP have been working in partnership since June 2006.  WEAEP was established in 2003 as a volunteer-run organization, staffed by a number of individuals who were committed to changing the lives of marginalised groups within their community.  WEAEP promotes the rights of women and children throughout Kenya’s Western Province.

Through a number of initiatives, including education, psychosocial support, training, and savings activities, WEAEP aims to empower women, promote and protect the rights of orphans and vulnerable children, and reintegrate street children back into society.

Wema Centre

ICT began working with Wema Centre in 2007.  Wema was established in 1993 in response to the plight of young girls living on the streets of Mombasa.  Operating initially from a three bedroom house offering emergency shelter to girls on the street, Wema’s work now focuses on four different areas: psychosocial support, rescue and reintegration, education and skills training, and income generation.  Wema’s aim is to rehabilitate vulnerable children and youths and provide them with the support they need to become independent and productive members of the community.
