The aim of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children Support Project is to improve the quality of life for the orphans and vulnerable children in Morogoro region of Tanzania.
OBJECTIVES
- Identify needy orphans in Morogoro and determine their needs for support.
- Assist most of the homeless orphans to return to their homes of origin or settle in other safer living environments.
- Empower needy and vulnerable young children, who fail to continue with formal levels of education, through formal or informal vocational skills training for self-reliance.
- Provide material and psychosocial support according to need so as to build their self esteem.
- Mobilize community participation and involvement in offering care and support.
- Build capacity and empower older carers 2 to lessen the burden of care through income generating activities.
- Provision of health care and sexual reproductive health information and HIV/AIDS awareness creation
ACTIVITIES
- To conducting needs assessments for the orphans and neglected children.
- To place vulnerable children in primary, secondary and vocational schools.
- To pay school fees and other school related expenses.
- To provide medical care and food supplement to the sick children and those living with HIV/AIDS.
- To conduct counseling sessions and school and home visiting for youth, orphans, street children and their relatives.
- To provide education to orphans and street children at the Street Side School.
- To place homeless children in a safe living environment (foster parenting, adoption and placement to orphanage centre).
- To provide sexual reproductive health information to OVC, guardians and teachers
- To provide training on entrepreneurship and start up funds for IGAs
- To create and encourage community action through community volunteers, community based programs and community based child care centers
TARGET GROUPS AND NEEDS
The project will target 160 older carers. The target group will include AIDS orphans, Children living with HIV/AIDS, old carers (grand parents who care children and for orphans), child headed house holds vulnerable children living in streets and young mothers. These are individuals whose vulnerability and poverty put them into the risk of HIV infections and re-infections. Because of their vulnerability; they hardly get opportunity for their socio-economic development. This project, therefore, aims at creating opportunities for them. |
