Orphans and vulnerable children are recruited to the OVC Project from the streets of Morogoro. After recruitment they are taken to the Faraja Drop In Centre in the market area of Morogoro for assessment and counselling, there they are given opportunity to meet and interact with each other and food is also provided.
After assessment, those between the ages of seven and eight years old are placed in formal primary schools. Children who because of their age, are no longer eligible for entry into the primary schools are placed into the special Street Side School which began in 1997 as a rehabilitation and reconciliation centre for street children and the most vulnerable children.
The first SSS class was held under a mango tree. Group counselling and health education was also provided under the tree. Since then a block of classrooms has been constructed in a secure place, free of distraction and free from the pressure to return to the streets.
At the centre, children benefit from primary education, counselling ,medical care, life skills, fine arts, sports and games, breakfast and lunch are also provided.. |
